A MODERN DEPARTMENT WITH EXPERIENCED SPECIALISTS

Department of Thoracic Surgery – Uni Hospital General Medical Treatment Facility

The Department of Thoracic Surgery at Uni Hospital General Medical Treatment Facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and tools in order to provide complete diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the thoracic cage.

The Department has an echomamograph combined with 3D ultrasound for the most accurate mammary gland examination. The device allows adequate examination of the thyroid gland and is an important tool in the diagnosis of the processes in the pleural cavity and the peripheral areas of the lungs.

The bronchoscopy equipment at the Department is the most modern one in Bulgaria. By using it, both standard bronchoscopy as well as cryobiopsies of pathological foci and transbronchial biopsy of suspected lymph nodes under ultrasound and X-ray monitoring can be performed.

The thoracoscopy equipment is the latest model of the Storz Company and allows the prevailing number of surgical interventions – about 75% – to be carried out mini-invasively.

The Department has a videomediastinoscopy for a biopsy of the mediastinal lymph nodes in the onset and (re-)staging of oncological diseases.

The scope of work of the Department of Thoracic Surgery includes all basic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of a radical and palliative nature:

  • Surgeries of the thyroid gland in benign and malignant processes;
  • Surgeries of the mammal glands in benign and malignant processes;
  • Axillar and cervical lymph node biopsies;
  • Lung surgeries – in cases of pneumothorax, tumors, echinococcus, tuberculosis, interstitial processes – predominantly thoracoscopic interventions;
  • Pleural effusions – for biopsies or pleural effusions, in order to improve quality of life – exclusively using mini-invasive techniques;
  • Surgeries of the mediastinum in cases of data on pathologically enlarged lymph nodes – exclusively using mini-invasive techniques;
