A MODERN DEPARTMENT WITH EXPERIENCED SPECIALISTS
Gastroenterology is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system and the liver. These diseases account for about a quarter of the world’s total morbidity, about 30% of all malignancies are the various cancers of the digestive system, and are the reason for about 40% of cancer patients’ mortality. On the other hand, in the past decades, gastroenterology has developed specific methods of diagnosis and treatment – gastrointestinal endoscopy and the ultrasound method. They revealed new horizons in diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of a number of diseases of the digestive system, becoming a bridge between Internal Medicine and Surgery.
The Department of Gastroenterology at Uni Hospital has been designed to meet the highest European standards in providing medical services in gastroenterology.
The Department has endoscopic equipment for upper and lower endoscopy, endoscopic cholangiopancreatography, and two ultrasound devices offering possibilities of application of all modern technologies – contrast-enhanced ultrasound examinations, elastography, endoluminal ultrasound, intraoperative ultrasound, and interventional procedures.
The following are routinely carried out in the Department:
- Therapeutic procedures in gastroscopy – balloon dilations in achalasia and stenosis, prosthesis of the esophagus in malignant and peptic stenoses (insertion of a metal mesh to provide nutrition to the patient). Polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resections of benign stomach processes. Endoscopic ligation of esophageal varices – in acute hemorrhages and scheduled: endoscopic hemostasis in cases of bleeding in the esophagus, the stomach and the duodenum –hemoclipsis, injection, electrocoagulation, and argonplasm coagulation.
- Therapeutic procedures in colonoscopy – endoscopic polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resections, balloon dilation, hemostasis.
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (a procedure to reach the patient’s bile and pancreatic ducts through the mouth, and certain therapeutic actions are performed) – papillosphyncterotomy (expansion of the inflow of the duct in the duodenum), extraction (removal) of stones from the bile duct, mechanical lithotripsy, placing of dentures, dilation of stenoses.
- Procedures under ultrasound monitoring – biopsies, cysts and abscess puncture, percutaneous cholangiography and percutaneous drainage of the bile tree.
This department fosters a team of doctors who combine many years of experience, dedication and young colleagues’ ambition, care and compassion – demonstrated by every member.
We always think and work for our patients along with our colleagues and friends from all other clinics and departments at Uni Hospital.
